9-5-09 What is skiing?
by admin on Sep.05, 2009, under Main
A great friend of mine shared this definition of skiing with me - the pure joy and freedom of being in the mountains on the magic of snow, with the nicest people you will ever meet, wings strapped to your feet, making and breaking your own personal boundaries with no comparisons. A personal journey of the highest order.
People often measure success in terms of documented accomplishments.
In skiing, that would mean contest results…..or maybe even having enough sponsors to where all of your money earned during the fiscal year came from skiing. Even though there are only a handful of “freeskiers” in the world that can claim this status, it still sounds much more glamorous than it really is.
These professional skiers, pay for their own trips to Alaska. They don’t necessarily get paid by the film production companies. They get paid by their sponsors when the gear they ride is seen in the movie. How long can these athletes sustain this? Usually only for a few years.
The entire notion that you’ve “made it” in skiing is simply a frame of mind.
With that being said, when does anyone “make it”? Perhaps when you medal in the olympics, your name will live forever…..I think what I’m trying to say is, life is one big ride.
You’re never going to get to a point where everything is happiness, and pain is excluded.
Look at all of the “big time” celebrities who have been said to have “made it”.
Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Patrick Swayze, etc. They definitely had big highs during their careers, but those have also been matched with extreme lows. All of that and having it broadcast to the world is something no human being should have to endure.
So when certain people ask if I’m a professional skier, I say “no”. Ski instructors are professional skiers. They work for big corporations, join the rat race and work for an hourly wage while they ski.
When I ski, I’m not any ones tool. I don’t have to jump off a cliff for a paycheck. I don’t have to turn my love into work. I don’t have to run around to a bunch of companies spouting off how great of a skier I am in order to pay the bills. I ski not because I have to, I ski because I love to, and I don’t want to taint my relationship with something I hold so close to my heart. I’m not a dancing bear, and I do this for nobody except myself. This isn’t to say I won’t be competing any time soon……..but if I choose to, it will be for personal reasons. Definitely not for the “fame or money”………..LOL
Skiing is about FREEDOM and FUN.

Great food for thought… I think you’re right on target for defining a true skier
